Orchard Villa Elementary School Supports H.E.R.O.
H.E.R.O. President Steven Kirby is an educator by profession. He spent the first part of his career teaching 3rd grade for three years at Orchard Villa Elementary School in Liberty City, a community within Miami, Florida. When the teachers and students at Orchard Villa Elementary heard about the earthquake they decided to hold a fundraiser to raise money for the victims. The students organized a coin collection fundraiser while Nancy Yates, a teaching veteran of over 35 years had her students collect cans and recycled them for cash. The students were able to raise a total of $225.00 dollars! After the fundraising had ended they were still unsure which organization should receive the donation. Realizing that Steven had started H.E.R.O. to aid the orphans and street children of Haiti, it was determined that H.E.R.O. would be the thankful recipient of the contribution. We thank Orchard Villa Elementary for their donation and are grateful to have the support of the students, teachers, and administrators in our efforts to make a difference in the lives of youth in Haiti.
School Supplies for SOPUDEP
Less than half of Haiti’s children will be attending school this fall. The scarcity of public schools, the price of tuition, and the number of schools destroyed by the earthquake all present obstacles to educating the country’s youth. In spite of the challenges, there are a few schools working to provide an affordable education for the children in their area. One such school is SOPUDEP, one of H.E.R.O.’s partners and a Haitian grassroots organization that educates children in the Petion-ville area. For the morning session, tuition is low and students are never turned away because of an inability to pay. In the afternoons, they run a free schooling and lunch program for local street children.
Students at SOPUDEP are blessed to have the opportunity for an education, but are rarely able to afford the much needed school supplies to enrich their education. When the Nazarene church in Zillah, Washington heard this, they decided to do something about it. They adopted SOPUDEP as their mission project for Vacation Bible School this year, encouraging the children to collect school supplies for the students in Haiti. They collected notebooks, backpacks, pencils, crayons, markers, glue, and more. Over a thousand items were donated! H.E.R.O. was able to transport the items to Haiti where they will be distributed to the students of SOPUDEP when school resumes in October.
Eastview High School Supports H.E.R.O. In Haiti
H.E.R.O. President Steven Kirby had the honor of being invited to speak about his experiences in Haiti at Eastview High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Mia Hendrickson, a Family and Consumer Science teacher and FCCLA faculty sponsor, asked Steven to speak to her classes, FCCLA student group, and the schools of her own children. In addition, Mrs. Hendrickson organized a student fundraiser that resulted in a donation to H.E.R.O. of over $400 dollars! That is enough money to feed an entire school for a month or even send four students to school for an entire year! H.E.R.O. thanks Mrs. Hendrickson, her FCCLA student group, and her students for their contribution to H.E.R.O. and for helping our mission to serve the most disenfranchised youth in Haiti.
